    What is Sadaqah?

Sadaqah is a voluntary charitable activity encouraged through the Islamic faith. The literal translation means ‘righteousness’ but in Islam it is used to refer to a virtuous act or an act of kindness for which no reciprocation is expected. It is not always necessarily monetary aid.

Why is Sadaqah important in Islam?

Sadaqah is performed solely to please Allah and is intended to show mercy. As the Prophet said, “Charity extinguishes the sins like water extinguishes a fire”. This suggests that Sadaqah is a means of repentance for one’s sins and is thus important in Islam, and it is an action which can be called to as evidence of their dedication to their faith.

What are the benefits of giving Sadaqah?

There are many religious benefits of giving Sadaqah, such as to ease hardships, atone sins and give protection on the Day of Judgement. Sadaqah also promises equality and offers protection. There are also social benefits, as Islamic charity is intended to help the circulation of wealth and aims to give all members of the community, including the most vulnerable, an equal standing in society.

Who can you give Sadaqah to?

Sadaqah can be given by anyone to anyone.

What is the difference between Sadaqah and Zakat?

Zakat is the third of the five pillars of Islam, officially meaning “that which purifies”, and is fulfilled by the annual payment of a set sum depending on the individual’s wealth. Only eight types of people can receive Zakat contributions, outlined by Allah in the Quran as:

    • The poor
    • The hungry
    • New Muslims and friends of Muslim communities
    • Those in captivity
    • Those who fight in the name of Allah
    • Those struggling with unmanageable debt
    • Those responsible for distributing zakat
    • Stranded or struggling travellers
